Workwear Certifications, in Plain English

The standard is the first buying decision in this industry. Here is what each one actually means, without the jargon or the PDF safari.

Safety standards exist so that a garment's protection is tested, not promised. Every certified product at Wrkhaus Workwear displays its standards on the product card and page, and we supply conformity documentation with every order. Below are the standards covered by our current range.

EN ISO 20471: High Visibility

The European standard for high-visibility clothing. Classes 1 to 3 define how much fluorescent background material and retroreflective tape a garment carries. Class 3 is the highest and is required for motorways, dual carriageways and rail.

In our range: Beacon Hi-Vis Executive Jacket, Beacon Hi-Vis Softshell Jacket, Apex Hi-Vis Waistcoat, Beacon Hi-Vis Polo Shirt.

RIS-3279-TOM: Rail Industry Standard

The UK rail industry standard for trackside clothing. Requires hi-vis orange to a specified chromaticity with defined tape configurations. If it is not RIS-3279-TOM compliant, it does not go trackside.

In our range: Trackline Rail Jacket, Trackline Rail Coverall, Trackline Hi-Vis Orange Polo, Trackline Rail Trousers.

EN 343: Waterproof Protection

The standard for protection against rain. Two figures are quoted: resistance to water penetration (1 to 4) and breathability (1 to 4). A 4:4 garment is the ceiling of the standard.

In our range: Beacon Hi-Vis Executive Jacket, Beacon Hi-Vis Bomber Jacket, Trackline Rail Jacket, Trackline Waterproof Rail Suit.

EN ISO 11612: Flame Resistant

Protection against heat and flame. Code letters A to F cover limited flame spread, convective, radiant and contact heat, and molten metal splash.

In our range: Forge FR Coverall, Forge FR Work Jacket, Forge FR Trousers, Forge Arc Flash Coverall (APC 2).

EN 61482: Arc Flash Protection

Protection against the thermal hazards of an electric arc. APC Class 1 and Class 2 define the protection level under box-test conditions.

In our range: Forge Arc Flash Coverall (APC 2).

EN 1149-5: Antistatic

Electrostatic dissipative protective clothing, required wherever a static discharge could ignite an atmosphere, including petrochemical and ATEX zones.

In our range: Forge FR Coverall, Forge FR Work Jacket, Forge FR Trousers, Forge Arc Flash Coverall (APC 2).

EN ISO 11611: Welding Protection

Protective clothing for welding and allied processes, rated Class 1 or 2 against spatter and radiant heat.

In our range: Forge Welder's Jacket.

EN ISO 20345: Safety Footwear

The safety footwear standard. All rated footwear carries a 200 joule toe cap. Codes such as S1P, S3 and S5 add midsole penetration resistance, water resistance and sole performance.

In our range: Fathom Safety Deck Boots, Gauge S3 Safety Boot, Gauge S1P Safety Trainer, Gauge S3 Waterproof Boot.

EN 388: Mechanical Glove Protection

Gloves rated against abrasion, cut, tear and puncture, plus an A to F cut level under the ISO 13997 blade test. Cut level D and above is the benchmark for serious cut risk.
